Strawberry Mansion High School

Vans is delighted to announce Strawberry Mansion High School of Philadelphia, PA and George Washington High School of San Francisco, CA as winners of the eleventh annual Vans Custom Culture competition. Vans Custom Culture was launched to provide high school artists and students a platform to embrace and showcase their creative talents. This year, Vans’ continued its dedication to give back to the arts through its competition where students had a chance to win $50,000 to benefit their school’s art program. Students were asked to use Vans as their canvas and apply their creativity to Vans footwear. New this year, Vans offered an additional $50,000 and made digital submissions available for students who did not have access to a physical pair of shoes. In addition, the top four runner-up schools in each category highlighted below will now receive an artist mentorship program equaling one digital lesson from one of the following Vans’ art ambassadors Kelly Breez, Robin Eisenberg, Todd Francis, Penelope Gazin, Tony Whlgn or Jay Howell in fall 2020.

“Congratulations to both Strawberry Mansion & George Washington High School. The growth of Custom Culture within the past eleven years has far exceeded our expectations and allowed us to make a difference for more students than we could have imagined when we started this program,” said Carly Gomez, VP Marketing of Vans the Americas. “Enabling creativity remains our focus and we quickly pivoted the program so all participating schools could submit their designs even if they were stuck at home. Again, the submissions we received far exceeded our expectations and the participation from students showcased the creative spirit when it’s needed the most.”

Through both the physical and digital submissions it’s evident that the breadth of talent and creativity nationwide has been at an all-time high. This year’s contest has certainly presented some unique obstacles along the way but each high school could not be deterred in showcasing their own individuality and creativity.

Thank you to our partners Yoobi, Americans for the Arts and Journeys who joined us in drawing attention to the importance of art education across the country and provided art materials to all the participating schools.

Vans Custom Culture has grown tenfold since its inception in 2010 reaching hundreds of thousands of students and putting more than $1,000,000 USD back into high school art programs nationwide.

31 Days Of Vans 2019 Is Officially Here! #31daysofvans

It’s July, and what does that mean?  It’s time for everyone’s favorite unofficial Vans month, where we annoy the shit out of everybody, by posting (at least) 1 pair of Vans pics on your favorite social media platform of choice, and hashtagging #31daysofvans.  Why?  Because you’re down with us!  Our community grows every year, and this is a great way to take pride in that.  It’s all about the people, and not about us.  We just foster it and help it grow.  Just for the record, this is something the Vans community started back in 2015.  Any similar campaigns just have no style or creativity, so step off!  It was created by @hansoloman, one of our guys, and we’ll always try to make sure he gets that credit, no matter how large and world-wide it becomes.  We also have to give credit to the homie Kyle (@iamrocketkyle / @poprocketcreations), for creating the dope graphic we see here before us.  Looking forward to next year’s already!  This is something he started last year, but I see it continuing FOR-EV-ERRR.  Thanks!

…also, we’ll be linking up with @hr_la on another #v31 contest this year, so be sure to tag #v31 and #getyourvansathotrod if you want to participate in it.  There’s giftcards to be won from Hot Rod, for a few lucky winners!

Flying Dog Brewery – “Year of the Flying Dog” Sk8-Hi (Free give-away!) #YearOfTheFlyingDog @FlyingDog

Vans Bar Shot

Here’s something for all of you (and us) craft brew enthusiasts out there!  Frederick, Maryland’s very own Flying Dog Brewery has come out with their Flying Dog Sk8-Hi, featuring custom artwork by the iconic artist Ralph Steadman, who you may recall from his illustrations in Hunter S. Thompson’s 1971 novel “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas“.  That’s not the only thing that adds to the coolness of these Sk8-Hi’s!  Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an alcoholic beverage brand on the side of a pair of Vans (i.e. Coors Light, Coors Extra Gold, and Pabst, to name a few), this IS the first pair of Vans created by a craft brewery, so that’s something yeah?  Oh, did we mention that there’s only 50 pairs made?  Did we also mention that Flying Dog is going to be giving them away through their social media and you’ll also have a second chance by signing up on their website?  Who doesn’t love free Vans?!  Also, according to the pics, these appear to be a Vault OG release, by way of the “ORIGINALS” heeltab.  If they are in fact LX’s, then that’s just icing on the cake for us Vans snobs!

Here’s a little excerpt from Flying Dog:

“Good Beer. No Shit.” It’s not just a mantra; it courses through our veins. It’s everything we stand for. What is it for you that makes you stand tall and stick it to the man?  We kind-of had to do something awesome for the #yearofthedog, so we’re giving away 50 pairs of limited-edition #Vans #Sk8-Hi ‘s designed by Flying Dog. You want in? We thought so.

Vans Crowns John P. Stevens High School Winner of the 2016 Vans Custom Culture Design Competition #VansCustomCulture

John P. Stevens High School_Edison NJ_Winners

Words via Vans:

“Vans, the original action sports and youth culture brand, is proud to welcome John P. Stevens High School from Edison, N.J. to the ranks of winners of the Vans Custom Culture design competition. As the grand-prize winner, John P. Stevens High School has been awarded a donation of $50,000 for the school’s arts education programs to help foster the students’ #RightToArt and support the next generation of creative individuals.

In partnership with Americans for the Arts, Journeys, truth®, Laguna College of Art and Design and Blick Art Materials, Vans hosted the top five high school finalists at a final event held on June 8 at MAMA Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Vans reached out to creative minds across action sports, art, music and street culture to form a panel of judges that exemplify what it means to invest in the creativity of their respective talents. This year, YouTube personality Maddi Bragg, Vans professional surfer Dylan Graves and top chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo behind Los Angeles restaurants Animal, Jon & Vinny’s and Son of a Gun, as well as special musical guest Echosmith, selected the winning custom Vans shoe designs among a talented group of young artists representing the top five high schools. The remaining finalists – Eastern High School (Louisville, Ky.), Moanalua High School (Honolulu, Hawaii), Orange High School (Orange, Calif.) and Sandy High School (Sandy, Ore.) were each awarded $4,000 on behalf of Vans toward their arts programs.

“Art has always been an essential ingredient of the Vans DNA. Whether it was through creating custom footwear for the skateboarders of the Dogtown era or young kids doodling checkerboard across their sneakers, Vans have been a canvas of expression for 50 years,” said Kevin Bailey, VF and Vans Global Action Sports and Outdoor Brand President. “We created Vans Custom Culture to not only raise awareness of declining arts education budgets across the country, but because we also inherently believe that today’s youth deserve the Right to Art. As such, it is our duty to provide a platform that enables creative expression for generations to come.”

Now in its seventh year, the Vans Custom Culture competition continues to inspire and empower creativity among high school students across the country. Since the inaugural competition, more than 10 percent of high schools nationally have participated in Vans Custom Culture and more than $600,000 has been contributed to support arts programs. Nearly 3,000 high schools registered for this year’s competition, designing four pairs of blank Vans based on four themes: Action Sports, Art, Music and Local Flavor. One of the designs from the grand-prize winners, John P. Stevens High School, has the opportunity to be produced and sold in select Vans retail stores, as well as online at Vans.com.

In addition to the grand prize, Vans donated an additional $50,000 to non-profit partner, Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading organization for advancing the arts and art education. This year, Vans Custom Culture was recognized for its innovative charitable approach, taking home top honors in the education category for the 2016 Cause Marketing Halo Awards.

Vans Custom Culture partners Journeys, truth® and Laguna College of Art and Design also provided participating schools the opportunity to raise additional funds for their art education programs. As a long time Vans partner, Journeys awarded a $15,000 ‘Local Attitude’ award to Moanalua High School for creating the most compelling ‘local flavor’ design.

truth®, one of the nation’s most successful and longest running youth smoking prevention campaign, challenged the students to customize a skate deck inspired by their reaction to a raw fact about tobacco. Station Camp High School in Gallatin, Tenn., took home the $10,000 truth® donation, for its winning design that shows what it looks like when smoking is finished for good.

Finally, Laguna College of Art and Design, a premier national art and design college and the first to offer a BFA degree in Action Sports design, partnered with Vans to provide the opportunity for every single student that participated in the 2016 competition the chance to apply for a $25,000 scholarship to be received upon admission. Almost 80 students will be eligible for the scholarship, which will enable them to continue their creative path and earn their BFA in Design + Digital Media.”

Vans x Pabst Blue Ribbon – “PBR Vans 2.0” Sk8-Mid (Details) #Pabst #PBRVans #PBR #PabstBlueRibbon

10899068_1625999191012048_9750290_n

We’ve been waiting for details to drop on these PBR Sk8-Mids, and yesterday Pabst Blue Ribbon kicked off the campaign, giving us all a chance at getting a pair.  Last year, they held a country-wide scavenger hunt, as well as an online hunt, hiding random pairs in bars and public locations, and posting up clues on their various regional social media platforms.  Pairs were also given away weekly on the Pabst Blue Ribbon website, cleverly hidden throughout different pages on the site, some out in plain view, and others incorporated into existing graphics, and once you found a pair, if you were quick enough, you could then fill out your information and a few months later you’d receive a free pair in the mail.  A few of us were lucky, but most were not.  Well rejoice!  This year PBR is allowing you all a chance to get a pair right now, without having to hunt them down, BUT there is a catch.  You have to spend $150 on their webstore, and when you go to checkout, the option to pick your size of Vans x PBR Sk8-Mids pops up.  So that’s all there is to it…if you have $150 to spend on various PBR related knick knacks of course!  Do it for the shoes people!  They will also be doing the same scavenger hunt as last year, hiding free pairs every Friday on their website.  Try your luck, or if you must have these, then just fork out the $150.  Well worth your money if you’re a Vans collector like us.

Vans x Dime – “Glory Challenge” contest (Video)

Words via Highsnobiety:

“After the successful unveiling of the Dime x Vans Slip-On Pro, the two entities hosted the Glory Challenge: an invitational Pro/Am contest specifically designed for non-contest skaters. Unlike your run-of-the-mill contest, the objective was to impart entertainment. In addition to around $7,600 in cash prizes for the winners, to each of the challenge’s victors, spoils of beer, skate decks and pride were bestowed upon them. Non-traditional events like the “Race Challenge” put skaters’ running speeds to the test, while more self-explanatory events like the “Best Tricks Challenge” allowed for skaters to captivate an engaged audience.”
