Vans Family – “31 Days of Vans” Skate Half Cab (UTP Review!)

IMG_6330

Here they are!  One of the biggest surprise releases of the year.  Something I got to be a part of, from the very beginning when it was just a conversation about how Vans could join in on the 31 Days of Vans month-long celebration, and just to be clear, I DID NOT DESIGN THESE, but I did get to have my input heard on if they were dope enough for our Vans collectors, and I also got to help with all the brainstorming on what else we should do, like add the dope enamel pin! So, as most of you know, these dropped the other day, exclusively on the Vans Family app, and sizes were pretty much sold out after a few hours.  Maybe faster, since sometimes the site shows inventory, until you check out.  Anyways, congrats to those who secured a pair, and this is more of a pic review, featuring my trusty ol iPhone for pics, which I must say are much nicer with an 11 Pro, than my old SE I was using for years.  I really do need to do more of these UTP reviews.  I’m sure some of y’all miss them.

Enjoy!

My Top 5 Vans Pick-Ups of 2015 #underthepalms

Top 5 Vans Pickups of 2015

It’s been a good year for Vans.  No, scratch that.  It’s been a GREAT year for Vans!  The collaborations were top-notch.  Every sub-brand had something cool to offer.  Vault by Vans pumped out a lot of epic collaborations, and Vans Syndicate finished off their first 10 years strong with some of the best retros and re-releases we never thought we’d see.  The GR collaborations were just as epic, speaking mainly of Disney and the Young At Heart collection.  It’s no surprise that Vans’ Instagram followers show more enthusiasm and response than all of the other shoe brands out there.  I always get asked to form my own list of top sneakers of the year, and for this year I wanted to share my personal 5 favorite pick-ups.  I’ve also created a little back story for each shoe, so enjoy!

Vans Vault x Blends – Old Skool Zip LX “Bones” (Official Under The Palms Review!)

BlendsOldSkoolZipLX-25

I have to give the biggest shout-out to our friends over at Blends!!!  I can’t believe they’re finally here!  When sample pics first popped up online of the black Old Skool with the familiar bones jazz stripe, we instantly knew who was behind this creation, and started beasting over them.  It was only about a year ago that Blends released their 10th anniversary Sk8-Hi Reissue Zip LX “Bones”, and with that epic shoe, and instant cult status, a legacy was born.  Now, we’re only two shoes deep into this legacy, but this awesome design is all theirs.  Nobody did it before them, and quite honestly, who would dare replicate it?  We’d shame them in an instant!  The apparent motorcycle culture inspiration is awesome and makes for some great design aspects.  Simple black colorways, with white accents, and white soles are all that you need when you have premium leather, a side zipper reminiscent of a leather motorcycle jacket, and a bad-ass bone on the side of your shoe!  And let me go back to the leather on these once more.  If I’m not mistaken, Blends utilized a higher grade of leather on these Old Skool Zip LX’s, than they did on the Sk8-Hi Reissue Zip LX from last year.  It just feels softer, more supple, and the grain looks to be of higher grade.  Take a peek at my detailed shots for a better look.  Unlike the 100 pair production of last year’s release, this year there are about triple that, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to stroll into your local Blends location mid-afternoon and be able to pick these up.  If I were you, I’d be dusting off your camping chairs, and deciding on which location you want to line up at, as these are on everyone’s radar this time, and there shouldn’t be any rain in the forecast like last year, to keep some folks at home.  Bottom line…don’t underestimate these if you want them.  I’ll be seeing some of you in line on Saturday morning, if you plan to go to the Costa Mesa location.  There will also be pairs allocated for Blends online shop, so stay tuned to their newsletter, twitter, Instagram, etc. for drop info and pricing.

Drops:  Saturday 5.31.14

Vans Vault x Bows & Arrows – “Acid Test” Era 59 LX (UTP Exclusive Review!)

AcidTest5

Collaborations are always exciting in the world of sneaker collecting.  We get to see a shop or brand’s personal creation.  Sometimes it has an awesome inspirational story beind it.  Sometimes it’s a falsely made up one.  Sometimes it’s about the artist who helped them design it, or a theme of some sort.  There’s no rules to it, except to make it about you, and that’s what Bows & Arrows in Berkeley, CA did.  Representing the local “mind expanders” looking for that perfect hallucinogen, they decided to go with a trippy twisted pattern on a 10 oz. canvas throughout the entire shoe.  It’s nice to see the NorCal psychonauts represented, without referencing the “Dead Head” culture, which seems to be the go-to theme, rainbow tie-dye patterns and all.  The black on white theme usually makes for a less than stellar concept, but this pattern is just ridiculously dope, and the leather accents complement the entire shoe nicely.  A “B” woven label sits prominently on the tongue, for that custom branding we like to see on every collaboration, and what better way to break up an all-white vulcanized sole, than with a bright red Vault heel tab?  The numbers were limited, and the Bows & Arrows exclusive is now sold out, so use your internet searching skills and hopefully you can get a pair for a decent price!

Vans Vault x Diemme – Montebelluna Hi LX (Exclusive OTWS Review!)

IMG_8092

It’s not very often that I write sneaker reviews anymore.  With the amount of sneakers that bombard us each month, it’s hard to pick and choose which shoes are worthy enough of a review.  The Montebelluna Hi LX seen here, is undoubtedly worthy.  When we first caught wind that Vans was doing a high end collab with Italian shoemaker Diemme, we were all ears.  Months later, when we realized the MSRP on this collection, we were all up in arms!  With the Montebelluna Lo LX (Slip-On) coming in at a pricey $300, and the Montebelluna Hi LX (Sk8-Hi) at a hefty $350, one can understand why the sudden commotion, but let’s break it down as to what we have here.  We’ve got a hand-crafted, updated, Italian made, super limited, luxurious, classic silhouette, of one of our most favorite sneakers, from (well at least, one) of our favorite sneaker brands!  This is an epic shoe, and if you’re a serious Vans collector, especially one from the earlier days, then you can appreciate these.  The material choice is better than what you’d find on most douchey brand labels at your girlfriend’s favorite high end department store, and the instant you touch the supple inner lining, you’ll be sold.  If you don’t got the money for these, then sell of 2 or 3 of your earlier Supreme or Syndicates.  You can always find another one of those!  These will probably sit around for a little bit, but once they’re gone, they’re gone.  There’s no room for a reseller to make profit, so these will be bought up by people who will own and wear these.  Right now’s the time to make a move, as you can get these for below MSRP on eBay.  I got mine for $330 shipped, which I thought was a steal, until I got the shoes and saw that the seller left the price tag on the box, and saw that he paid $270 from Hot Rod!  As others stay on the fence, hopefully you pull that trigger on a future classic.

Check out my pics, that will hopefully help you in your decision, and no need to thank me Vans!  I just hope that you guys keep putting out dope stuff like this.  Stuff that the other brands don’t even bother to venture into.  Next up, hopefully you guys bring back a program to make one-off customs here in the USA, like the good ‘ol days!  If we’re willing to pay $350 for these shoes right here, then perhaps a premium price point will be worth paying to get a pair made!

Vintage Vans – Made in USA “Tribal/Picasso” Era (vintage pickups!)

Check out my latest eBay score.  A pair of men’s sz8 US vintage “Made in USA” Era’s in an all-over Picasso-esque or tribal print.  These appear to be an early 80’s pair, due to the shape they’re in, and the colors chosen.  I could be wrong, but there’s not much info to go off of.  I would gladly appreciate it if someone could shed some ligh on these!  Most of the 70’s Vans were made using white vulcanized rubber, and the black pairs didn’t start to show up until the 80’s.  The only thing we know is that they’re Made in the USA!  Enjoy the pics, and I hope to find more pairs in the future! -Guamstyles

Erwin’s pickups: Vans Syndicate x Carhartt – Old Skool “New Style” “S” (Camo & Natural)

This latest collaboration between Vans Syndicate and Carhartt – WIP (Work In Progress) has the Vans community going nuts.  With their damn near European exclusivity, and alignment with the Vans “S” group, these are on their way to being one of the best Vans sneakers of 2012.  Being that OTWS is truly worldwide, with like-minded fanatics hunting down their favorite Vans, it was only a matter of time until one of our international members posted up that they got their pair(s).  We can almost always guarantee that our Netherlands brother, Erwin, will be on to contribute.  He was somehow able to source the Camo, and the Natural (white) pair, and now that the website has worked out their issues, he may be ordering the black from there as well.  Sorry, still no shipping to the USA!  You can really make out the material details, and the quality of the leather, twill and corduroy materials.  The details are just as good as any prior Vans x Carhartt release.  If you’re like most of us, and are trying desperately to source a pair, then keep your eyes and ears open on our forum, as we may have a member who comes across the info and is willing to share it.  Thanks for the pics Erwin!

Vans x Santa Cruz – Authentic Cruiser Deck

Check out this awesome Authentic Cruiser Board designed by Vans and  Santa Cruz skateboards.  Cut from the profile of a Vans Authentic sneaker, with the respective top and bottom print on each side of the deck.  It’s such a simple design, but damn it’s so dope!  It’s even got a signature red heel tab on the back edge!  Word first got around about this board, on Instagram, and there was a lot of speculation as to whether it was going to be strictly for promotional use, or if it was going to be an actual item for sale, and I’m here to deliver the good news that this is definitely a production item, and in fact a few are showing up around local Vans stores here in SoCal!  They’re only available as a complete, and the price is a pretty penny, at $129.99 + tax, but take into consideration that this is a Santa Cruz board, with OJ III Hot Juice Orange 60mm 78a wheels, and KRUX 8″ trucks, and that it’s not just some cheap generic item.  I won’t tell you where I got mine at, but put in some work and you’ll find yours as well!  Good luck, and happy hunting!
