Help me find outlines of shapes of old school skate decks!

Post by Crimson Ghost »

So here's the deal. I've looked pretty much everywhere and all I find are pictures of bottoms of those decks. That's not what I need - since those decks aren't flat, the shape isn't accurate - tail and nose may be shorter than they actually are. If you have and 80's old school deck (no gay-ass slalom-style cruisers) lying around somewhere and if you are kind enough to outline it on 4 A4 sheets of paper, then scan it and e-mail it to me - I'll reeeaaally appreciate it. Or if you know where to find accurate outlines that'll be even better.

Isn't it just a book with graphics?

It's about deck graphics, sure, but you'd be able to get an idea of the outline from there.

If you're looking for nose and tail details, concave, that sort of thing, I'm not sure you're going to find it anywhere, aside from actually handling some old school decks. Still, Disposable might be able to give you some hints, esp since you can estimate nose and tail lengths based on how they measure up to the bolts. It's kind of a shot in the dark, though.

What are you looking to do? Cut down an existing deck to make something fun, or you going to go all-out and pressing something yourself?

I'm going to buy an uncut blank and shape it myself. Concave is fixed and truck holes are pre-drilled so I'm only looking for outlines.
I only have an outline of a Blitz x Misfits deck, I messed around with it a little bit since the original is 10" wide and with the blank I'm buying I'll be able to do 8,65" at best. So I'm looking for other outlines in case I'll find the whole cutting and shaping fun. And I'm sure I will :)
But yeah, thanks for the book, guys. I'll look into it :D

Edit: Holy shit, it's 55 bucks shipped

It's worth that 365 pages and all the decks are in it. From the first Zephyr boards on.

In that case, since you're cutting down a blank, most high-res art images should suit you, provided they're directly head-on with the art itself. To me, your best bet with those is doing some measurements based on wheelbase and then figuring out distances from the tip of the nose/tail to the bolts.

Used to be www.artofskateboarding.com was a great place for that kind of stuff, but the site's not working for me now. I don't know if it's down or moved, but there should be other sites out there with high-res photos. that's the same as what you'd be getting out of the book, so maybe save your cash and hunt around online.

(that said, I also have the book, and love it, so I still think you should get it.)

Anyway, you're playing a bit of a guessing game with this, and since you're cutting down, you can't do much about concave.

I've always wanted to do this, but lack the tools to do it (and when I head home where there are tools, I forget all about it).
Good luck, and have fun! As long as you make a shape your psyched on, that's all that matters. It's going to be one-of-a-kind!

All done in 2 hours. Of course I still have to sandpaper and paint it, but everything is going really good :D

That's so rad. Next comes the hardest part - choosing a graphic!

(if I may, I'd like to put in a good word for black flag bars)

Haha too late, I was so impatient that I put 3 clear coats and mounted trucks and griptape on that bitch! Skating that deck is an awesome experience :D

(I wanted to put those Suicidal Tendencies 'stars' - blue/white colorway)

And there it is :) Trucks are a bit too narrow, but it's not a big problem.

I'll be starting another project in a few weeks - Knox's Cop Beater (again - 8.65", so the shape had to be altered).

And this thing right here is our local DIY project - concrete skate park. Here's how it looked like a few weeks ago:
