Vans’ history and its life-long bond with the skate and surf culture began in 1966 in Southern California and the rolling out of a single pair of shoes: the Authentic. Generations since have embraced this simple beacon of the Vans heritage for its unbiased effectiveness, recognizable design, and versatility. This Authentic CA’s traditional Paisley patterns in Limoges and Olivine receive their characteristic appearance from a printing technique that draws color out of fabric instead of pasting it on. A process, through which the intricacy of Paisley is mitigated and lets it speak a humbler language of color. Transitions from background to foreground and back are blurred, and a look established that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Inspired by a classic bandana aesthetic, red pop color linings emphasize a deliberate design strategy that comes full-circle with silver eyelets, round woven laces, and pigskin hangflags.
