Have you tried adding a thin insole? Sometimes on shoes that run a little big (or if the insole breaks down and starts rubbing weird, like lots of GR's do...) I take an insole from an old pair of running shoes. They're always pretty thin (nowhere near as thick as insoles from syndicate or pro model Vans) so you can cut them to shape and usually might add just enough padding to help better your fit for an .5 size up on those slip-ons!
